Why Link Aadhaar with Your Bank Account?
Linking your Aadhaar number to your bank account is important for several reasons:
- It enables Direct Benefit Transfers (DBT) — government subsidies like LPG, scholarships, and MGNREGA wages are credited directly to your account.
- It simplifies the KYC (Know Your Customer) process for financial services.
- It helps in income tax compliance and prevents duplicate accounts.
- It is required for several government welfare schemes.
Methods to Link Aadhaar with a Bank Account
1. Online via Internet Banking
- Log in to your bank's net banking portal using your credentials.
- Navigate to the section labelled "Aadhaar Seeding", "Update Aadhaar", or similar (varies by bank).
- Enter your 12-digit Aadhaar number and confirm.
- An OTP will be sent to your Aadhaar-registered mobile number for authentication.
- Submit — the linking is processed within a few working days.
2. Via the Bank's Mobile App
- Open your bank's official mobile banking app.
- Go to Profile / Services / Account Settings.
- Find the option to link or update Aadhaar.
- Enter your Aadhaar number and authenticate with an OTP.
3. At an ATM
- Insert your debit card and enter your PIN.
- Look for the "Services" or "More Options" section on the ATM menu.
- Select "Aadhaar Registration".
- Enter your Aadhaar number when prompted and confirm.
Note: This option is available at ATMs of most major public and private sector banks.
4. By Visiting the Bank Branch
- Carry your original Aadhaar card (or a photocopy) and your bank passbook.
- Fill out the Aadhaar seeding form available at the branch counter.
- Submit the form along with a self-attested copy of your Aadhaar to the bank representative.
- The bank will process the linking and notify you via SMS.
5. Via SMS Banking
Some banks allow Aadhaar seeding via SMS. The format is typically:
UID <space> Aadhaar Number <space> Account Number
Send this to your bank's designated SMS number. Check your bank's official website for the exact SMS format and number.
How to Check If Your Aadhaar Is Linked to Your Bank Account
You can verify the linking status through the NPCI (National Payments Corporation of India) mapper:
- Visit the NPCI portal and navigate to the Aadhaar Mapper section.
- Enter your Aadhaar number and the OTP sent to your registered mobile.
- The portal will confirm which bank account(s) are linked to your Aadhaar.
Important Points to Remember
- Only one bank account can be the primary Aadhaar-linked account for DBT purposes at a time.
- Your mobile number must be registered with your Aadhaar to complete OTP authentication.
- Linking does not affect your banking operations in any negative way.
- In case of issues, contact your bank's customer care or visit the nearest branch for assistance.
