Why Keeping Your Aadhaar Address Updated Matters
Your Aadhaar address is used for identity verification across banking, government schemes, tax filings, and more. An outdated address can cause issues with document verification, benefit delivery, and e-KYC processes. UIDAI allows residents to update their address online — conveniently, without visiting an enrollment centre in most cases.
Methods to Update Your Aadhaar Address
There are two main ways to update your address:
- Online (Self-Service Update Portal – SSUP): Best if your mobile number is registered with Aadhaar and you have valid address documents.
- Offline (Enrollment Centre): Required if your mobile number is not linked, or if you are updating biometric data along with address.
Documents Accepted as Proof of Address
You must upload a valid Proof of Address (PoA) document. Accepted documents include:
- Passport
- Bank statement or passbook (with address, not older than 3 months)
- Post Office account passbook
- Ration card
- Voter ID card
- Driving licence
- Government-issued residence certificate
- Utility bills — electricity, water, gas (not older than 3 months)
Step-by-Step: Online Address Update via SSUP
- Visit the UIDAI Portal: Go to myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in and click on "Update Your Aadhaar" or navigate to the Self Service Update Portal (SSUP).
- Login with OTP: Enter your 12-digit Aadhaar number and the CAPTCHA. Click Send OTP. An OTP will be sent to your registered mobile number.
- Select "Address Update": After logging in, choose "Address" from the list of fields you wish to update.
- Enter New Address: Fill in all address fields carefully — house/flat number, street, landmark, city/town, district, state, and PIN code.
- Upload Supporting Document: Scan or photograph your PoA document clearly. Upload it in JPG/JPEG/PNG format (file size usually under 2MB).
- Submit the Request: Review all details and submit. You will receive a Service Request Number (SRN) — save this for tracking.
- Track Your Update Status: Use the SRN on the UIDAI portal to check the status of your update request.
Address Update via Address Validation Letter
If you do not have supporting documents but have a valid current address, UIDAI offers an Address Validation Letter process:
- Request a secret code to be sent via post to your new address.
- Once received, enter the secret code on the portal to validate and update your address.
This is especially useful for people who have recently moved and do not yet have utility bills or bank statements reflecting the new address.
Common Issues and How to Avoid Them
- OTP not received: Ensure your registered mobile number is active and has network coverage. Try after a few minutes.
- Document upload failure: Ensure the file size and format match requirements. Scan in good lighting.
- Address update rejected: This usually happens if the document is unclear, expired, or does not match the address entered. Re-upload a clearer copy.
How Long Does the Update Take?
Online address updates are typically processed within 30 days. You can download your updated e-Aadhaar once the change is reflected in the system. An SMS notification is usually sent to your registered mobile number upon completion.
